Grupo de Capoeira Angola do Acupe is a 501C3 nonprofit international cultural association that seeks to preserve, promote and grow the art of Capoeira Angola, an Afro-Brazilian martial art disguised as a dance, by inspiring wellness, leadership, and community throughout the Northeast. Our board members are listed here.
Grupo Acupe currently teaches Capoeira Angola to a diverse age range three times a week. The group also holds quarterly events that bring in internationally renowned masters of Capoeira Angola from Brazil. These events have drawn large and diverse audiences from all over the Northeast and Canada.
Grupo Acupe was founded in Pelourinho of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Our group has a long and continued history of being active with community development and youth programs, directing seminars on physical and music education, and participating in several government programs both in the U.S. and Brazil.
Grupo Acupe has held classes, demonstrations, workshops, and seminars throughout the United States that share and expand on the physical, musical, linguistic, and philosophical aspects of Capoeira Angola.
Since 2005, under the direction and support of Contra-Mestre Chorão (Alberto Nunes), Grupo Acupe has expanded to the United States, and currently supports three groups in Cambridge Massachusetts, Indianapolis Indiana, and Brooklyn New York. Contra-Mestre Chorão is regularly invited to teach workshops throughout the United States and Europe, where he continues to build relationships within the global Brazilian community.
